With so much build up, it felt rushed and rang a little untrue. this was a shared opinion with others i know who read it. Though enjoyable, the ending did leave me a bit wanting. I found the thriller aspect of the novel intense, and was anxious to get past the rough storyline, which was bound to be uncomfortable. It tocks back to 2007 where she is frightened to the point of paralysis spending hours in ritualistic process to help keep her false sense of safety intact. The pendulum ticks from 2003 where she meets a bouncer and falls in love. Both threads occur simultaneously via journal style chapters in varying years. In short review, ‘Into the darkest corner’ details a woman both on the decline and during recovery. Even in fiction the victim is mainly forgotten and the aggressor is spotlighted as noteworthy. I can however tell you pretty much anything about Lee, the antagonist, the rapist, the violent and obsessive boyfriend. I barely remember her face, and during conversation i could eventually remember her name though i have lost it right now. While the review was on hold however, I forgot the protagonist, the victim. The violence was raw and I didn’t want to revisit it so soon. Was it entirely too realistic regarding stalking, abuse, rape, abject terror causing crippling OCD? Yes, in my limited experience, i would say so.Ī little social commentary: I held off on writing a review for a few weeks after reading ‘Into the Darkest Corner’. Was this novel suspenseful, difficult to put down, and overflowing with intrigue? Yes.

6/9/2023 0 Comments Dust by Hugh HoweyThey go to the cell Holston locks himself inside. Pan to a dead body visible on the wallscreen. Holston wobbles, grabs a chair, makes it to his office. Up in the cafeteria, Holston dodges through the kids, pan to a shot of the wallscreen, and then as he’s walking toward his office, a short flashback to his wife on the ground screaming to be let out. You could even throw the intro credits (or whatever you call them) on the screen during this bit. Close up of his hand on the railing, the worn metal treads, the chipping paint, a shot of a light bulb flickering, rust stains on the wall, more squealing from above, maybe a ball goes bouncing through a railing and tumbles into space (or a paper plane, or an article of clothing). Start with Holston on the stairs, walking up, sounds of children playing (fans of the books would dig this being ripped right off the page). If I was entrusted with writing the screenplay, I would tell the story of WOOL pretty much as it is in the book, but with longer flashbacks, more of a sense of mystery and discovery, and more with Marnes and Jahns. I would only tell what’s in the first WOOL. So here’s what I would do (SPOILER ALERT!): This and the offer from the BBC has me wondering just what sort of film or TV show anyone would expect to make of WOOL. (I suppose I’ll know more about this *after* we talk). Tonight I’ll be talking to my film co-agent, who I think is going to shop WOOL around to studios and production companies. 6/9/2023 0 Comments Finding it cora carmackI enjoy Carmack’s tales and quickly consumed this. Jackson helps her unravel her own dreams and desires. With each new city and experience, Kelsey's mind becomes a little clearer and her heart a little less hers. And the idea of a horse that could count, tell-time, solve math problems, read, spell, and more has obvious kid appeal. Since Hans had stayed on my mind for the twenty-some years since college, I knew there was a strong hook to his story. When I began writing for children and brainstorming ideas for writing a narrative non-fiction picture book, Hans immediately came to mind. What was the spark that made you say- hmm, maybe this is a picture book? Oh wow, back in college! So you held onto the idea for a long time before writing it. I learned about Clever Hans in an Introduction to Psychology class I took in college. Kerri, how did you first learn about Clever Hans? Like OLD ROCK a few weeks ago, I learned about CLEVER HANS via SCBWI’s free webinars, and I felt compelled to reach out to author Kerri Kokias about this equine wunderkind. It’s a fun ride for all ages (just look at the cute illustration of Hans by Mike Lowery)! This non-fiction story looks at a horse who made scientific history. There are many clever picture books being released, but I don’t want you to miss the cleverest: |
