6/12/2023 0 Comments Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews![]() But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles. Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. Let me give you the low down on the first three books in this series because, most likely, you will read them in quick succession like I did. ![]() I’m always up for a good urban fantasy, when I heard about this “Kate Daniels” and Ilona Andrews, I was intrigued…and I was hooked after the first few pages of book one. ![]()

Although Drama is a work of fiction, she draws from her personal experiences to create content. ![]() In an interview with School Library Journal, author Raina Telgemeier responds to a question about her inspiration for the graphic novel by saying she wrote from her life experiences, such as what she felt, saw and knew. The book: Quaid and Aslan work in rival departments in the Toronto PD and they are put together on a case. ![]() Temporary Partner is the first in the Valor and Doyle Mysteries.Īgain the Nicky-Nick combo has given me a win. I’ve encountered Knausgaard obsessives who work for the government. I’ve gone on a Knausgaard bender with a young gay black man and an Australian grandmother - together. In private, we indulge our vice by spending hours analyzing every little aspect of his character, speculating on what he meant by this or that section, on whether he really is as good a writer as we think he is, especially when there’s so much opinion to the contrary. The stereotype of the Knausgaard fan is of a thwarted literary man eager to tell you about his own idea for a systems novel, but there are many of us out there who don’t fit that description and are obsessed - to the exasperation of our loved ones - with a writer best known for an epic six-volume work called My Struggle (yes, the same title as Hitler’s memoir yes, it’s intentional). This distresses many of my female, queer, and trans friends: Torrey, you have every woman writer in the world available to admire, but you won’t shut up about a tall, handsome Nordic-dad dude who spends five pages explaining how to turn on a stove? Guilty. Karl Ove Knausgaard is one of my literary heroes. ![]() 6/10/2023 0 Comments Shattered Glass by Dani Alexander![]() This is a fantastic, complex tale tale that explodes as magnificently as Austin's life. ![]() And if you think you're in for a simplistic tale of sweet love, don't hold your breath. Bunny-slippers, but he has his reasons for this remarkable bit of self-discovery at the ripe age of 26. If you like snarky, wise-cracking heroes who actually do have feelings buried deep down somewhere, (he's smart as well as being a smart-ass), then you'll love Austin. What a roller-coaster ride through Detective Austin Glass's life as he goes to a dive of a diner to meet an informant, becomes obsesses with a pair of bunny slippers on a busboy and then all hell breaks loose, with his case, his career, his love-life, and just about everything and everyone's life around him, too! ![]() ![]() ![]() Naturally this was followed by stirrings of the usual Phase II of a Cultural Phenomenon: backlash. Egan’s sprawling novel-in-stories, every chapter a different experiment (a celebrity profile, a second-person essay, a PowerPoint presentation), won a National Book Critics Circle Award in March, then the Pulitzer Prize, and, a week after that, an option from HBO for a series. And then Jennifer Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad began beating the Time cover boy in awards contests coast-to-coast. That novel, of course, was Jonathan Franzen’s much-hyped Freedom. As of a few months ago, you could be forgiven for thinking that 2010 had spawned only one beautifully written polyphonic novel about musicians, compulsives, and postmodern American despair. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The outcry over the treatment of SeaWorld's orca has now expanded beyond the outlines sketched by the award-winning documentary, with Hargrove contributing his expertise to an advocacy movement that is convincing both federal and state governments to act.
